New Era of Diabetes Testing: Precision Medicine

31/01/2023

At present, most doctors diagnose disease based on patient's description, routine examination (such as blood examination), and through their knowledge and experience. Patients' treatment plan is often the same. However, as everyone is different, same treatment plan may not be suitable for all patients.

Recently, medical professions have advocated ‘Precision Medicine’, breaking through traditional medical testing barriers by adding biomedical testing (such as genetic information, biomarkers, etc.), especially in diabetes testing and diagnosis. By collecting information such as genotypes, health status and clinical data, precise analysis can be conducted in database to design personalized treatment plan, which gives patient the right treatment at the right time to maximize the therapeutic effect.

Traditional Diabetes Screening Fails to Provide Right Treatment

The most common method to diagnose diabetes is to undergo diabetes examination, which evaluates blood glucose and HbA1c level to determine whether it exceeds the normal level. However, this can only tell whether you have diabetes, but cannot help diagnose the type of diabetes and determine the best treatment plan.

Correct classification of diabetes is especially important for precise treatment as not all diabetes patients are suitable for the same treatment plan. If the diabetes is caused by the attack of the immune system, insulin therapy is required. If it is caused by insulin resistance, weight loss and oral drug is required to increase insulin sensitivity. Some types of diabetes can even be reversed by lifestyle modification. However, traditional diabetes screening does not include such tests to classify diabetes types.

Since traditional diabetes screening cannot help doctors diagnose accurately, doctors mostly rely on the symptoms of patients to infer its diabetes type and arrange treatment plans with a stepwise method. That is to arrange a treatment plan for a period, then evaluates the effect to see whether the treatment plan is suitable. If the effect is not satisfactory, another treatment plan will be replaced and so on, until the best treatment plan is found. This method is imprecise and time-consuming, causing patients to miss the best opportunity for treatment. When the best treatment plan is found, patients’ diabetes condition has been already deteriorated and develops complications.

New Era Precise Diabetes Test Helps Doctors Determine Precise Treatment

As an expert in diabetes testing, GemVCare's diabetes tests precisely meet the needs of different diabetes patients, which cannot be provided by traditional diabetes screening. It aims to help patients identify the type of diabetes as early as possible, help doctors determine precise treatment plan, and seize the golden opportunity for treatment to have early diabetes management.

BChealth is a comprehensive diabetes test. By detecting C-peptide and islet cell antibodies level, and calculating insulin resistance and islet β-cell function index, it can accurately classify diabetes types and help doctors determine different treatment plans according to patients’ needs. Treatment options including insulin injections, different types of oral drugs and weight control, etc.

MD35 can accurately identify the types of MODY (Maturity Onset Diabetes of the Young), which can help doctors determine personalized treatment plan for patients, including replacing insulin therapy with oral drugs. Click here to learn more details about MD35.

In addition, we have a diabetes test that accurately assesses the risk of diabetes complications - DProtect®. It also predicts the effect of early insulin therapy, pharmacogenetics and different diabetes treatment options. Doctors can design personalized healthcare plans for patients based on the test results to help patients manage diabetes and delay the onset of complications. Click here to learn more details about DProtect®.
